DRY HIRE AV SUPPLY · COMPARISON GUIDE

LED Walls vs. Projectors. A Dry Hire View.

Written for pro event producers, experiential design firms, and event production design companies speccing their own shows. A head-to-head from a dry hire AV supplier with a dedicated fleet — we supply the gear and the trucks. You run the show.

Bright Frame Studios is a dry hire AV supplier with a dedicated fleet. We do not run shows and we do not send crews. What we do is put the right gear on the right truck to the right dock — so the producers, experiential design firms, and event production design companies we support can execute against their own scope of work.

That framing matters for the LED-vs-projector question. When you're the one specifying the package — and you own the crew, the timeline, and the client relationship — the comparison is really about supply chain: what ships cleanly, what your techs can trust on the dock, and what your AV supplier can actually put on a truck this week. Here's how the two stack up.

    SECTION 01HEAD-TO-HEAD

    Five metrics. One supply chain.

    Brightness in ambient light

    LED WINS

    LED WALL

800–1,500 nits indoor; 5,000+ nits outdoor. Punches through house lights.

    PROJECTOR

Requires dim room. Washes out fast above ~50 lux of ambient light.

    Load-in complexity for your crew

    LED WINS

    LED WALL

Modular 500x500mm cabinets. Ground support or hang, cable, map, done.

    PROJECTOR

Throw calc, rigging plan, focus pass, backup projector, screen build.

    On-site footprint

    LED WINS

    LED WALL

Zero throw distance. Sits flush against scenic or the deck.

    PROJECTOR

Needs throw distance or short-throw mount plus service clearance.

    Dedicated fleet freight

    LED WINS

    LED WALL

Standardized road cases, palletized, ships on our own trucks across the Gulf South.

    PROJECTOR

Fragile optics + screen kits; broker freight risks and re-crating fees.

    Dry hire delivered cost

    TOO CLOSE

    LED WALL

Owned inventory + dedicated fleet. No brokered freight, no redundancy tax.

    PROJECTOR

Lower rental line, higher freight and backup unit cost to protect the show.

SECTION 02WHY LED WINS THE SPEC SHEET

    Brightness is the whole ballgame.

Projector brightness is measured in lumens — total light output — and that number gets divided across the screen. A 20,000-lumen projector on a 16-foot wide screen delivers roughly 300–400 nits at the surface. The moment the room your producer walked into has house lights, stage wash, or windows, contrast collapses — and that becomes an on-site problem your crew has to fight.

LED brightness is measured in nits at the panel surface. A standard indoor P2.97 panel puts out 800–1,500 nits. Outdoor panels run 5,000+ nits. The image is native — no throw distance to eat, no ambient light to fight. When you're speccing dry hire for a corporate keynote or a brand activation, that predictability is what makes LED the safer line item on your gear list.

SECTION 03DEDICATED FLEET & SUPPLY CHAIN

Owned inventory. Dedicated fleet. No brokered freight.

Bright Frame's dry hire LED inventory is standardized on 500x500mm cabinets — the same modular grid across the fleet. That means a 10x6 ft confidence monitor, a 24x14 ft main IMAG, and a 40-ft custom scenic backdrop all pull from the same panel pool. Rig it, cable it, map it — your techs are working with panels they already know.

Projection is a bespoke supply build every time: matched projector pairs, screen kit, rigging plan, and a backup unit riding along. Fewer SKUs to case up, more edge cases for your supplier to get wrong.

Because our dedicated fleet is owned — trucks, drivers, and warehousing — we self-perform delivery across the Gulf South out of Kenner, LA and regional staging. No brokered freight, no LTL surprises, no re-cased panels arriving mid-load-in. Your producer gets a single point of contact from PO to strike, and the gear shows up on the truck it was manifested on.

    SECTION 04WHEN PROJECTION STILL WINS

Four scenarios where your gear list should still include a projector.

    Large-format architectural mapping

200-ft façades at night for an experiential activation. LED cannot compete on scale here.

    Houses of worship & theaters

Controlled ambient light, long runway sightlines, tight budgets — projection is a proven fit.

    Single-day, budget-driven breakouts

A one-day 80-person breakout on your producer's slate doesn't need an LED wall on the truck.

    Rear-projection scenic elements

Translucent scrim or set pieces where you need light passing through the surface, not emitted from it.

"We don't run the show. We make sure the gear on your truck is the gear you spec'd."
